How to Choose a Console Table for Your Hallway
· KnightsMaide
The right console table is the one that fits your space without blocking it, so measure before you look at styles. Here is how to choose one for a hallway, living room or entryway.
1. Measure the depth first
Depth decides whether you can walk past comfortably. In a narrow hallway, keep at least 80–90cm of clear walkway in front of the table. That usually means a table 20–30cm deep, which is still enough for keys, post and a lamp. Wider spaces, such as behind a sofa, suit tables 30–40cm deep.
2. Match the height to its job
Most console tables sit between 75cm and 85cm high. Behind a sofa, aim for roughly the height of the sofa back so the two look matched. In a hallway, height matters less, but check that anything stored underneath, like baskets or shoes, fits.
3. Choose the length for the wall
A console table looks best when it is about two-thirds the width of the wall or sofa behind it. Too short looks lost, and too long crowds the space.
4. Pick a base that suits the room
- Hairpin legs: light and open, so the floor stays visible. Good for small hallways because the room feels bigger.
- Solid oak with a steel frame: a stronger, more solid look that suits larger rooms.
- Corner or half-moon shapes: useful where square corners would catch hips, or where you only have an awkward corner.
5. Choose a wood and finish
Solid oak is hard-wearing and takes everyday knocks well, and the grain stays visible whatever finish you choose. Lighter oak tones suit bright, Scandinavian rooms, and darker walnut-style tones suit warmer rooms.
6. Think about what you'll put on it
Keys, post, a lamp and a plant are the usual. If you want to store things, choose a table with a shelf or leave room for baskets underneath.
A quick checklist
- Walkway in front of the table is at least 80cm.
- Table is about two-thirds the width of the wall behind it.
- Height is 75–85cm.
- You've checked the table fits between any radiators, doors and sockets.
